Police fuel cocaine and ecstasy use across province
VOCM published a news clip today regarding a marijuana shortage in Corner Brook. Well, the real word on the street is that the shortage is actually province wide.
Over the past several months there have been countless high profile marijuana busts across the province, and as Corporal Kymbal Vardy of the RNC says, “police are doing a good job of keeping marijuana off the streets”. And, while these headlines may bring comfort to the conservative citizens of our city, and province, the real story is that hard drugs, such as cocaine and ecstasy have never been easier to obtain.
The same, “word on the street”, states that as the RNC and RCMP dedicate increased resources on taking down petty marijuana dealers, hard drug dealers can peddle their wares at a lower cost to a young population that can’t find or afford marijuana.

The guys I know who are heavy into weed (they are friends and I am the sober type) have been saying for MONTHS that coke, acid, E, percocets, Demoral, and you name it could be obtained within ONE PHONE CALL yet weed is very rare.
We can obviously imagine that alcohol and E at a club would be a rush and if someone is really into drugs, that seems like a very probable route they would take.
Recently a man had significant problems with ecstasy use that caused some health problems.
They’ve had a couple weeks since that incident and they are not reporting any busts.
I think that there is something in it for them, to have such hard drugs on the street. Crime rates go up and they have something to do. Really tragic.
how about the “word on the street” saying that these high profile busts are only stating an amt seized of say.. 115 lbs when later the “word” is that the police actually took 400lbs. where is this dope going if it’s not being logged within the rnc/rcmp?
also another good point, crimes rates are always lower when there is dope around. everyone’s too stoned to break into a house or car. more addictive harsh drugs such as e and coke cause people to do bad things for them. weed is not sketchy.
I think the crusade against marijuana use and trafficking in the province is totally misguided. It seems to me like a bid by law enforcement to curry the favor of the province’s citizens by providing (any kind of) results and getting a “sinister” drug like pot off the streets.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure pot use should be the last item on provincial law enforcement’s list of vice to be stamped out.
I can’t imagine anyone desperate enough to hold up a convenience store with a dirty syringe just to get a dimebag.
I agree with JT: As harder drugs proliferate the city, I predict a rise in violent crime.
The reality is a generous portion of people in town want to get high. If the pot is in short supply, it follows that people will look to other, more readily available (albeit more harmful) alternatives.
I’m just a layman, but it seems like the police may be taking the easy way out when it comes to tackling the influx of drugs in town. After all, pot is bulky, and gives off a certain unmistakeable aroma; on the other hand, E and coke are both more easily concealed, weigh less, and aren’t such an olfactory dead-giveaway.
It’s the 2009s: Why not put the resources into the real problem?
This whole weed crackdown thing is ridiculous (not as ridiculous as pluralizing 2009, mind you, but still very ridiculous).
The amount of resources that must go into making these weed busts is no doubt considerable. Meanwhile, if you follow the VOCM online updates (they must have a police scanner manned at all times) it’s like there’s a 24/7 crime spree happening in this province.
Busting weed will not reduce crime. There’s every reason to believe it actually increases it (money lost from a drug bust has gotta get recouped somehow).
It’s time for the police to get their priorities straight.
Weed is so not 2009s anyway.
